The Phone Rings And...

To litigious to be an agent.

Now we are unwilling or reluctant to answer our phone. It might be a robocall, a scammer, a wrong number, or a telemarketer.

If my phone rings, I answer it.

Hey guys, it may also be a buyer or seller. It may be someone asking about your listing. It may be someone thinking of selling. It may be someone just wanting real estate advice. It may be your seller calling from a different phone. It may be the media calling because they are looking for a last-minute quote or a professional opinion.

It may be another agent or a friend reaching out. Not everyone leaves a message.

Margaret Rome

But we don’t answer unless we recognize the number or the area code. Yet we put our cell numbers on our signs, websites, blog, advertising, park benches, business cards, and we sign up for stuff everywhere so the world can reach us.

But when it rings, we fear it could be 'that' annoying number.

It takes seconds to find out the reason for the call, take action to either hang-up, delete, or block the number!

But what if that is a 'real person' phone call?

Opportunity missed!!

You are so right on this. More often than not it is a live person.  Block those numbers that are harrassing you, but how do you know which is which if you don't answer.

Margaret, we share the same philosophy, answer and go from there.  Showed one of our listings to a buyer today and her comment was "you answered the phone, a lot of the agents I called didn't respond or call back".  There's business to be had and they're calling to give it to us if we just bother to answer.  Bill

Morning Margaret.

I average 15-21 robo calls a day including Sundays.  I keep blocking the same numbers, but they keep on calling.  Headed to the store today to see if there is anything else I can do

Rose Mary Justice If you don't answer...you don't know.

Liz and Bill Spear We work so hard to make our phone ring and then are reluctant to answer.

James Dray Now that's a lot of robocalls every day.

I'm one of those people who is inundated with robocalls.  Perhaps, it's because my number is all over my internet marketing materials.  I average about 5 or 6 a day.

Good morning, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland I don't receive business calls..... those who have my number will leave a message and I jump right on it.... the team members answer their phones....

Posted by Barbara Todaro, Marketing Agent for The Todaro Team (RE/MAX Executive Realty ) 11 days ago

Good morning Margaret. When active I answered every call. Now, if I do not recognize the number I do not answer. Retirement means you have choices. Not answering is mine. Enjoy your day!

Good morning Margaret. I am with you. I answer the phone because that is why I have it.

Hi Margaret,
You are right, of course. One of my greatest joys of being retired is I no longer feel compelled to answer my phone. I am one who does NOT answer my phone if I don't recognize the number. If they leave a message I'm interested in I will call them at my convenience. My phone, at this point in my life, IS for my convenience... not theirs.

Nor do I answer my phone when I'm with other people, in a store or otherwise busy.

Hello Margaret - life is about choices.  To answer or not to answer.  We each find ways that work best for us.  Right now.  Good for you for finding that way.

Good morning Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - you never know unless you answer.  Unless, of course, it is a number you know to be spam.

My phone is now alerting me to spam risk calls. Thankfully. I do answer most of the time, unless I recognize the same ole Zillow numbers calling me from the Seattle area. Lol.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD  You are using technology to screen your calls but answer the rest!  When I get a "bad" call ie  Robo, spam, telemarketing, etc I put it into my contacts as SPAM...never to take that call again.

Posted by Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland, Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome ( HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400) 11 days ago

Hi Margaret:

The robo and spam calls drive me nuts - I probably average 5 a day. The ones I do not answer are those where the caller ID says United States or in som cases another country. It's happening more and more.

I agree if you are in business and your number is listed to the public in multiple sources you should be answering it every call.

I'm retired for the most part and selective about any jobs I take now so I'm selective with the calls I answer. If I don't recognize the number I hit the "screen call" button and my phone sends a message to the caller to identify themselves. It's awesome. They usually just hang up.

Posted by Sharon Tara, New Hampshire Home Stager (Sharon Tara Transformations) 7 days ago

Sharon Tara Tell me more about this "screen call" button.

Posted by Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland, Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome ( HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400) 7 days ago

I agree, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland . I can't tell you how many times I have assumed it's a sales call and it turns out to be a prospective client that I may have missed had I not answered.

Posted by Cindy Bernstein, Downsizing & Home Organizing Services in Baltimore (Aim 4 Order LLC) 7 days ago

I make a point to answer the phone. If unable to answer, will wait for the voice message and if no message, then no return call. Robo calls and spammers are diligent and take up so much time!

Posted by Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can!, So Utah Residential, Referral & Relocation REALTOR (Prado Real Estate South) 7 days ago

Robo calls here are rampant. Some days there are 5 - an hour. Many of them now are from my local area code, and I was shocked one day to see that two of them were from ME. A few other times I answered because the call appeared to be from a local business or person I knew. Nope. Those were spam/scam calls too.

I do see your point - some people who are "real" won't leave a message. But - when it rings as often as it does here, if let every call interrupt my work I'd never get anything written!

Posted by Marte Cliff, Your real estate writer (Marte Cliff Copywriting) 7 days ago

Cindy Bernstein And that's a perfect example...assuming it is a sales call. I answer and when I find out it is an unacceptable call, I mark it spam. Never to answer the same bad number a second time.

Posted by Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland, Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome ( HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400) 7 days ago

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! They do take up so much time. That's why I like to identify them so I won't have to answer the number ever again.

Posted by Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland, Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome ( HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400) 7 days ago

Marte Cliff  And you have a valid point. As a REALTOR®, those unidentified calls may be sign calls for my properties, a client, callers from my advertising or radio show. To me, it is just an inconvenience.

Posted by Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland, Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome ( HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400) 7 days ago

Yes, your business is different. Very few of my clients call on the phone. We communicate by email most of the time.

Posted by Marte Cliff, Your real estate writer (Marte Cliff Copywriting) 7 days ago

It is something that is part of the phone I have...Motorola G6. I'm not aware of anyone else having it. My husband and I both have it (we both have the G6) but we have different service providers so I know it's something to do with the phone not the service.

Whenever we get an incoming call, it provides three choices:

If you choose "screen call" it lets the caller know you are screening and it shows you what they are being told and prints out anything they say in reply.

You then have the option to connect to the call or report it as spam.

Usually the callers just hang up.

It does identify itself as a Google service. It's not an app we added, it's just came as part of the phone.

Marte Cliff You are right. My business is dependant on the phone. Always good to see you.

I have the same option as Sharon Tara with my google phone, it offers to screen the call, and often they hang up without leaving a message. Handy, when they do telly uo why they are calling when you don't recognize the number.

So glad I read the feed of comments on your post, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland ... as Sharon Tara's comment/info is wonderful.  Definitely going to check this feature out as it sounds like a winner.  I'm guilty of checking out the numbers closely prior to answering a call.  With so many of these calls now coming in (just read an article that said there were 4 times more calls of this nature in 2019 than 2018) it's hard not to have this reflex action ...
