Why Are You Afraid To Blog

afraid to write

Speaking with a member today, they confessed they were afraid of actually writing a blog.  When asked about their fear, the answer...they were worried about what others would think. This same member was writing good, thoughtful, lengthy comments with good content.

So I suggested they go back, take one of their responses and make a blog out of. For all practical purposes, the blog was written.

Go ahead take your own words, copy them, and make it a stand-alone post. To complete the blog...just add a photo or graphic.

Now I am looking forward to seeing if this sparked some inspiration. Guess I will find out in a day or two.

Do you think there will be any new posts by the member?

Good morning, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland great advice here....and your graphic makes perfect sense.... I remember my first day.... my fingertips would not write a post.... Lenn Harley told me to write what I know...  and I started writing.... at full speed.... it was like emptying all memories of the business.... your advice reminds me of Lenn's....

Hello Margaret - Hopefully your advice/suggestion will be considered.  You showed this person "how" now he/she gets to decide "when".

Excellent advice Margaret. It’s always that first step that’s the most difficult. Hopefully your advice will be helpful and encouraging

Good morning, Margaret... I'll be the first to admit that I was a stalker here in the Rain for a very long time before I jumped in with both feet. I have never worried about my basic writing skills... it was the fear of not understanding how to apply them in the blogging world.

Good advice Margaret, once the first few are written they become very easy.

I wasn't as much worried about what people think as what they would say.  People on social media can be mean. However, I never experienced that here. :)

I can remember back in Spring of 2008 when my broker encouraged me to come onto ActiveRain.  I literally sat and read posts for awhile before having much courage to write one myself.  It was easier than I thought, once I started.  But, folks here are friendlier than they are on many other social media platforms.

CONGRATULATIONS Margaret, on having this blog FEATURED in the Old Farts Club group!

Posted by Myrl Jeffcoat, Greater Sacramento Real Estate Agent (GreatWest Realty) 2 months ago

When I started here, I lurked.  Just logged in and read.  After much delay I finally left a comment or two.  Noticed no one bit.  Some more comments.  Still safe here :)   And then eventually a blog post and a wait, then another, then a 30/30 and the habit finally set in.  1000s of posts and mucho $$ for commissions from blogging, I'm here and going on.  And rare has been the time that anyone here has truly upset the applecart by being rude.

So blog, you've got much to gain!

Liz and Bill Spear Lurked, logged in, read, commented,  a few blogs, the 30/30, the habit and over 3000 posts and still going strong. Our blogging experience has been quite similar except for the fact that you are so very organized and I do it so willy nilly.

And I am still having fun and it is great for business!

Myrl Jeffcoat Thanks for the feature in the OFC group. Once we started, knew we had something to share and stopped thinking about what others thought...it was much easier. Friendships here have been amazing.

Hi Margaret- when I first started blogging the hardest thing for me was figuring out what to write about. Not being an agent, I didn't have listings or market reports. But thanks to the members here who gave me a lot of encouragement, I started, and haven't stopped.

We veterans forget our steps, feelings and unknowns now that be are seasoned. In order to gain in this life one must risk. What helps? That you are good enough as in worthy to take your place in whatever it is you are risking in. Perhaps a slight uncomfortableness, a boo-boo or an embarrassment but who didn't ?

Posted by Richie Alan Naggar, agent & author (people first...then business Ran Right Realty ) 2 months ago

Susan McCall From yesterday's conversation, it sounded like he/she might. While on the phone with this member...I wrote this blog to show them how simple it was to post without any fear. Voila, and it got featured...go figure!

Posted by Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland, Sell Your Home With Margaret Rome ( HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400) 2 months ago

Richie Alan Naggar Much of our wisdom comes from trying things, taking a chance when we were told things wouldn't work, taking risks..even making boo-boos or hearing I told you so. Exciting to try new things. And we got this smart by all of the wonderful experiences we have enjoyed in real estate and in life.

Hi Margaret:

No doubt many have felt the same way - I know I did when I started out and it took a while to get past it (well I'm mostly past it). When I taught some classes on blogging it was a common theme, along with the comment about not being a good writer. I bet your kind, and helpful, words will make a difference for this member.

Some bloggers seem to be very natural at it--posting great content, attractive photos and graphics, have a distinctive point of view.  Just start blogging--and stick with it--eventually a voice will emerge!

That is wonderful advice, Margaret. I get it. I joined Active Rain in 2014 but just became active in the last week. One of the biggest struggles I have had in real estate is my fear of being vulnerable. Oddly, real estate sent me on a quasi-spiritual path of self-discovery. It sounds funny, but it is true.

Posted by Krista Jenkins, REALTOR®, Residential sales and retail & office leasing (Egenbacher Real Estate) 2 months ago

Krista Jenkins, REALTOR® Look forward to reading your blog posts. Maybe you could blog about your path of self-discovery

Completely agree with you, Margaret! As a blogger, I encountered the same problem at the beginning of my journey.

As for me, my top priority is to write for an independent website (or to create my own), not for Facebook or other platform.

Only in this case, I'm sure that my content belongs to me.
