Choose An Expert Let Them Do What They do.

Many years ago, I was a porcelain artist who custom-made pottery for special clients.

When they came to my studio, saw my work ...I was able to tell a lot about them by the comments they made on textures, shapes, and colors. Then a trip to the client's house to see what I thought would work. Many times it was a custom piece that I "knew" their home 'needed'. My most creative pieces came when the client allowed no restrictions.  They just wanted to own one of my custom designs.

Choose an expert, let them do what they do.

I loved marti garaughty's art from the beginning.

When it was time to do my book cover, he was the only one I contacted. He asked many questions about my likes and dislikes but loving his work...I wanted to see what he would create. Such a smart move...I love my book cover.

Choose an expert, let them do what they do.

Recently contacted by a stager, Kerry Leikus,  for one of my beautiful but vacant homes,  and decided to work together. Had I previously seen her colors, furniture and accessories, I may not have proceeded. But I thought of myself, the artist, and wanted to give her that same freedom to create and show off her best.

Margaret, yes they reach out to us because we are the experts in our profession but then they want to tell us how to do our job a bit of a conundrum:)Endre

p.s. :  I love the fact that marti garaughty is back periodically sadly not as much as in the good old days of AR....

Thx for the mention Margaret, if only more people took this advice. If you hire someone who really knows what they're doing, take advantage of their experience and advice. Don't try to micro manage. ;-)

There's a book out called, "The Death of Expertise" by Tom Nichols.  In the book he points out how our society has drifted away from experts.  Everybody thinks they know more than the experts these days.  They think they can gain sufficient knowledge from the internet, or my favorite, "common sense".  And then they learn otherwise.  You're right Margaret, trust the experts, they know what they're doing. Best wishes to you.

Jerry Murphy, CRS, SRES Thanks for mentioning the book. One of the quotes is "Misinformation pushes aside knowledge."

Great advice, Margaret and I love the idea of gauging likes and dislikes by listening to the words your clients were using to describe the artwork.

I welcome input from those that I work for, but hearing "zillow says" sends me over the edge.  I believe that some folks don't view what we do as a profession.  If we are good at what we do and enjoy our work it appears to be a "breeze" to the untrained eye.  Little do they know. Have a great weekend.

Good evening Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland ,

I LOVE your new book cover! You were so smart to reach out to marti garaughty ...it's spectacular! He is right "If you hire someone who really knows what they're doing, take advantage of their experience and advice. Don't try to micro manage."

So glad that worked for you. It is hard when a "hands-on" person such as you are has to turn the reins of the horse over to someone else.
Since YOU focused on the creativity angle -- you created a better result for everyone -- All the best - Lynn

People with common sense listen to the experts , Over the years I have run into some of the very educated , and not so educated who tend to take advise from those who have no experience in the profession.

People would be wise to recognize you for your talent. Sometimes you just have to relax and rely on the experts!

Nice story Margaret!  An artist can paint for him/herself and hope someone wants to buy the piece, or actually investigate a potential client for what they prefer in a piece of art and then you customize it to 'work' for them.  Applies to many related arts.

We all tend to see if we can do things ourselves when the alternative seems too expensive, but obviously the expert who does the same thing routinely will get it closer to perfect, quicker, and at a reasonable cost.  Thanks!

I am not sue if it is the internet, social media or a combination of both, but i get many buyers and sellers who want to dictate what i do... and they are wrong, sometimes really wrong. I like having this talk up front and hop to avoid it.

Hi Margaret,
Sometimes I think we might know what we want... or think we know... until an expert shows us the possibilities and we are dizzy with delight over something we never imagined.

No shrinking violet, a business woman herself, Cathy's Mom invited me for tea when I brought her back to the hotel at the end of the tour. As we sipped, she wanted to know,
"How much did my daughter pay you for this tour?"

Great post as always Margaret!  Such smart advice.  People who specialize in their fields have worked hard to earn that reputation!

Stories are powerful tools to reveal a meaning without defining it. (Hannah Arendt) You defined it after each story, and that is okay. I believe people would have still understood your powerful message without the defintion.

Very true!  We are experts and what we do, unfortunately, not all  prospective clients realize that.  We also have to step back and let experts we hire do what they do best..such as your staging example.

So many people micromanage the experts.  You wouldn't tell a heart surgeon how to do his job, why would you tell a Realtor how to do theirs!!

June Piper-Brandon If you hire the right expert...there should be enough confidence to allow them to do the job. Does not mean you don't have questions and need clarification. Good to see you and all the best for the New Year!
