What Is Advertising ? Let Me Count The Ways

This would be my definition of advertising.

It is my job to let the folks know we are in real estate! It is not their job to remember!

Half of advertising does not work but what we don't know is which half.

Below is where this idea came.

''John Wanamaker (1838-1922) was a very successful United States merchant, religious leader and political figure, considered by some to be a "pioneer in marketing”. He is credited with coining the phrase “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half”.

Thinking about the different  kinds of advertising,

I just made this quick list, put them in alphabetical order

but I did not count them.

Bill boards

Blogging

Brochures

Bumper Stickers

Charitable sponsoring

Clothing

Digital

Direct mail

Door to door

Email blasts

Flyers

Grocery carts

Internet

Kiosk

License plates

Magazines

Mailings

Networking

New papers

Online directories

PR agent

Place-mats

Podcasts

Print media

Public speaking

Radio

Robocalls/automated calling

Signage

Sky

Social Media

Sporting events

Spam

Telephone

Television

Trade shows

Transit

Video

Vehicle wraps

Webinars

Good morning, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland I love this post.... it's right on the money and this statement says it all... “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half”.

I love the post. I agree with John Wanamaker. Thank you for sharing

Good morning Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland ,

Listing agents must market their properties and themselves until they become a household word. Love this post..you are right..its my job to let people know and remind them I'm in real estate. It's not their job to remember!

Hi Margaret,
That's a very extensive list of possibilities.  The challenge many agents face is choosing a few and sticking with them long enough to let them work... and not jumping around from thing to thing.

What a great list Margaret!  It jarred an idea!

Much gratitude!

Thorough list - but I'm curious about "sky" and "spam"?

Posted by Margaret Goss, Chicago's North Shore & Winnetka Real Estate (Baird & Warner Real Estate) 12 months ago

Love the list and love the quote too, Margaret! It's so true - if only we knew exactly which sellers that we farm were going to pick up the phone & call us!

Margaret Goss Good to see you..I'm going to address your comment first.

Spam-Think of all the junk mail, and unwanted calls as spam advertising.

Sky- There are the planes with banners, the blimps over big events and sky writing?

Carol Williams  So true"

" ...The challenge many agents face is choosing a few and sticking with them long enough to let them work... and not jumping around from thing to thing. "

So many times we  hear what dosen't work.. because it was only  tried once or twice.

Good stuff, Margaret!  That's a pretty comprehensive list, we're always looking for ways to be creative in our marketing - but the 50% thing is spot on --- some ideas we think will be hits and they fall flat.  Other times business comes in from ideas we had no idea would get anywhere.

I can't think of anything you may have omitted, Margaret. While we can use "Internet" in a number of ways, it all falls under the general umbrella. Same with social media. You have a comprehensive list.

Internet, hands down, for a person like me who doesn't much like to get off her big ol' butt, is my marketing tool of choice.

Hello Margaret --- thank you for the John Wanamaker quote - a true advertising classic.

What doesn't work? In my experience, kids' baseball team sponsorships and placemats. We did those and didn't get any clients directly from those sources.

BUT you never really know, because all of the things you do build upon each other. Every time a prospect sees your name and face in another spot they're reminded of you. Which sighting is the one that tips the scales and makes them choose you?

A fun thing with the placemats: We had our monthly breakfast meetings at the cafe with our agency name and photos on the placemat. One morning there were "out of towners" across the room who kept looking at the placemats and then back to us as if they were thinking - "Is that really them?

So many great comments here. We all go through this day in and day out.  Some marketing is static and some we have to rinse and repeat. It's sticking with it that's the problem. You are awesome at marketing and from your list, I bet you dominate your market!
