Summer Is For Grilling...But Not On Balconies

Who doesn't love the smell of summer grilling this time of year?

There are probably very few households that don't own some kind of grill for outdoor cooking.

But in Baltimore, fire codes prohibit the use of electric, charcoal, gas grills, hibachi, deep fryers or other fuel heating devices on any apartment or condominium balcony. It must be 15 feet away from these dwellings.

Have a wonderful summer but...be safe

Check out more information at Baltimore County Fire Safety

We don't have to have it spelled out in our condo and HOA rules.

It is spelled out in our County Law!

No grilling on Baltimore Balconies

This law does not pertain to single family and townhouses.

Thanks for the sad but probably smart news Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland. OK youz guys in Baltimore, break out the George Foreman grills. They actually do a great job with hot dogs and in the cool of the kitchen.

Good morning, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland good advice for all condo and apt occupants to follow.... fire spreads quickly .... enjoy cooking outdoors but do it safely....

Good morning Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland,

You make perfect sense with your advice..we have the same ordinances here..fires spread quickly and grilling is not worth the destruction fires can cause.

It's never a good idea to grill on a balcony, but we have some newish condos here with sprinklered balconies specifically so the occupants can grill on them. Crazy, huh?

It does make sense but I have people checking their condo rules to see if it is allowed.

Dorie Dillard Good reminder to be safe. July is the biggest grillin' month.

Lorrie Semler, REALTOR® in the Dallas area. Call/text 972-416-3417 Tell us more about those sprinklered balconies. That would be a good post.

I think Texas is trying to have all covered balconies installed with a sprinkler.

Good morning Margaret. Most condo communities prohibit grills on balconies. Never bothered me though.

You hit on an important topic, that I don't believe I've seen discussed before on ActiveRain.  A couple weeks ago, two houses burned across the street from my own.  It was caused by improper storage of propane tanks along the fence between the houses.

Myrl Jeffcoat We all need to get these safety messages out to the public. So sorry that two homes were lost that could have been prevented.

Grilling on balconies is not a good idea.  In our area, I know the ordinances are that a grill must be eight feet from a structure.

Chris Ann Cleland Good to see you! I think Baltimore's is 15 feet.

Margaret, here in Orlando it gets too hot to do anything outside in the summer.  I bought a great stainless steel grill a few years ago and it sat rusting by the pool.  ha.  But I do remember the great cookouts in summer my Dad would instigate.  I had the duty of making sure the charcoal would light properly.  Great memories, thanks!

Posted by John Henry, Residential Architect, Custom Home Design (John Henry Masterworks Design International, Inc.) about 1 month ago

John Henry In Orlando, you have the rest of the year to grill and enjoy those cookouts. Go make your  memories.
