Suck A Brain... Are You New To Real Estate ?

If you are new to real estate or just want to hear about how I got started in this business...I am going to share some of my ideas.

Find a REALTOR®, you like, admire and respect and go "suck" their brain! Offer to help with their open houses, putting up a sign or lockbox, have their car washed...anything to be around them. Emulate the good stuff. Ask questions.

This person does NOT have to be the biggest producer, this person does not have to have their name on the grocery carts or bill boards. You will know that person after some observation, watching and listening.

Ethics...If there is a question about ethics...stay away. You know right from wrong. That is not taught in books, classes or webinars!

Confidentiality: This is obvious. If someone shares information, it is NOT yours to repeat. Earn their trust.

Define your own values and stick to them at all costs.

Listen but be careful who you listen to. Not everyone is giving you the right advice or the advice you need. When you share your ideas...be careful of the nay sayers. Always trust your instincts!

Real estate is not as hard as it looks and it is not as easy as it looks. You've heard ABC (always be closing) a better one ABL (always be learning).

 Question:

What do you wish you had known the very first year you were in the business that cost you lost business or income?

Answer:

Not to let unimportant people or unimportant things become important.

There are no emergencies in Real Estate.

You cannot make chicken salad out of chicken poop.

 Question:

Was there ever a time you questioned whether you had made the right choice of being a real estate agent? What events caused you to stick with it and succeed?

 Answer:

I made a vow when I first got into real estate. If ever I said I don't like what I'm doing...I will get out. I have followed that vow . When there is something that does not go my way, I will find a way to remove it or change it. And never once  have I questioned that decision. Knowing you can leave at any time gives you power. This is my 28th year...no plans to change other than continue what I'm doing.

Question:

What are 3 things you have learned along the way that have positively affected you and helped improve your real estate business?

Answer:

'You get by giving' works in real estate as well as your personal life.

Calling a member each day...getting to really know other professionals. Listening to their concerns and challenges. Being able to know who to talk with for advice, learning and handling tricky transactions. I could write a blog about many different people who are always willing to help...no matter what. You know who you are because we have talked!

Learning to say NEXT  Don't dwell on the negative.. not situations and not people.

Margaret,

Love this post, and I am laughing at the chicken poop, as I happen to be making chicken soup...My father always said, when you mess with manure you come out smelling of it...LOL A

It's taken a while to be able to say NEXT. But it's very liberating and the best advice you can give a new agent. The vagaries of our business sometimes make it difficult to control everything we would like to control. When it goes astray, say NEXT.

LOLLLLL! This is one way to get the point hammered down! I have had my brain slurped many times over the years and I hope it was good for them too!  ;)
And of course, I am imagining an actual cocktail called 'Suck A Brain' . . . now how would I concoct that? (Thinking start with Viniq, because I like my gray matter shimmery! Plus, it matches your purple)

Well Margaret, this is just a perfect bit of advice. I wasn't sure what to expect at first. Lol. Now, it makes me wish I'd had someone's brain to suck long ago.  :)

Another easy and cheap way to suck a brain is to read books that were written by successful people.  They're free at the library.  What a deal.

Thankfully most of the unethical agents left the business in 2008 during that downturn as they were and are chasing the money.

There is little substitute that provides more valuable information than being able to suck the brain of a knowledgeable experienced agent.  When I was first licensed (in 1981), I was in an office of about a dozen really seasoned agents.  They took me under their wing, and made me successful.  I will be forever grateful to them.

You give fabulous and wonderful advice, Margaret. Although, I might make an exception to the statement there are no emergencies in real estate. Maybe that's because you don't live in California but reside in a more common sense part of the country. I have had "emergency listings" that needed to go on the market RIGHT NOW, and if I didn't do it, some other agent probably would.

Hi Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland Thanks for the wise advice and the many links to valuable blogs on the subjects.

I always like to read your blogs and pickup little bits ofadvice every time!

I am going to share your blog with my new agent, Lindsey Haden who just received her active Nebraska real estate license a few weeks ago and also has just joined AR.

I hope she starts blogging soon as she is a very smart young lady.

If you have spare time, please send Lindsey a message of encouragement...I believe she is one of the future leaders of the industry in central Nebraska...but she has to get through the early days...and months...and years!!

Have a great day!

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents That's a good emergency to have. I am referring to the agents who think finding termites or elevated radon or a poor home inspection is an emergency and react with panic.

There is always time to take an EMERGENCY listing.

Dear Margaret,

When I was new, I could have used a lot of this advice, especially the " there are no emergencies." A few colleagues gave me sleepless nights until I learned better.

I especially like the remark about following around another agent that does NOT have to be the 'top producer'.  Follow several agents in various stages of experience and note their specialties/niches--more to learn that way.

I once heard a newbie tell an old pro they were going to "suck their brain". True story. This particular Realtor was very secretive about this successes, so I don't think he was very giving with advice. Yours, however, is excellent! I hope people take time to read all the back issues you shared. There is a lot of solid advice available for the taking.
