Another Reason To Pick Up That Phone

Making a habit of calling a member every day since I started on ActiveRain has taught me so much. Today when speaking with Kathy Streib , we both had "a light-bulb" moment.. We were talking about upcoming contests and Kathy wants to encourage more people to pick up that phone and reach out to a member who may need some encouragement.

They may need a nudge if they have been missing for a while.

With the recent and shocking passing of our friend Lou Ludwig, this hit home even more. By the time we realized he had not posted for a while...it was too late.

I have called members in the past and found out they had been ill, had some tragedy or were just down and out and not feeling like blogging.

Margaret Rome phones

Sometimes that phone call was just what was needed to let that person know they were missed. Some started posting from that one phone call.

Kathy and I were talking about a future contest about reaching out to other members. ( I will not expect my friend Barbara Todaro who does not  like to make calls,  to participate.)

While talking and brainstorming with Kathy, I mentioned the calls could be to past clients.  Another reason to pick up that phone might be to reach out to say a Happy New Year.

Who to call?

How about all your current listings or your  clients from the past year or two.

Make it easy.

Before you put away, toss or recycle the holiday cards you have recently received, why not call those who sent them. If they thought enough of you to send a card...don't you think they would appreciate hearing from you?

Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland  I was so upset when I read about Lou Ludwig  I closed the computer for the day .  I did however call two clients who are getting ready to list their homes . I do have a list of a few members who have not posted in a while that I am going to call .

Happy New Year  Love our Chats

You have always been so awesome at calling other members, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland  and this would be a great contest to inspire others.  Maybe somehow  Kathy Streib  we could somehow do it to honor Lou Ludwig 's memory and as a gentle reminder sometimes it is too late to pick up the phone.  I am still mourning his loss.

Hi Margaret

I think it's a wonderful idea, and we have had a couple of contests about calling AR members and then writing about it - seems to me they were hosted by Debbie Reynolds  and called Ringing and Singing. But who really needs a contest to do this, as you do it just because you are who you are! I call now and then but not nearly as much as I would like to, and would enjoy doing more. It's always a pleasure!!

Good morning Margaret. Why would you single Barbara out like this? I'm miffed.

Now that's what I call a fancy phone!  I don't think it would fit as easily in my pocket as my cell does, however.

Posted by Myrl Jeffcoat, Greater Sacramento Real Estate Agent (GreatWest Realty) 7 months ago

We all adore Barbara Todaro especially me. She has given more to AR than any one I know. She teaches us by sharing her fabulous marketing genius. It’s a known fact I don’t send postcards and Barbara does not participate in contests making phone calls.

Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland you and I have known each other for many years now, and I know you too well to even think that you were jabbing me.... I don't answer the phone unless I recognize the number or you leave a message.... I jump right back on it, after I listen to the message... but you already know all of this....

Any time I have received a call from you or another Rainer, it has made my day.

Yes, Debbie Reynolds offered a call another member contest which encouraged your suggestion. Actually, one post was accepted for both that and the January Jumpstart - two requirements met with one post -- that is how important it is to enhance community interaction.
Happy New Year - Lynn

Lynn B. Friedman This is such a great contest Debbie Reynolds  promotes each year. I love how she encourages others to make calls.

Hi Margaret, So glad you and Kathy are collaborating about the future contests. With two great minds like you girls have, it will have a powerful impact.

Margaret- we all get stuck in a rut and either text or email someone. Picking up the phone, even if for a 10 Minute call can have an impact on someone in ways you may not realize.

Posted by Kathy Streib, Home Stager - Palm Beach County,FL -561-914-6224 (Room Service Home Staging) 7 months ago

I love this post and love the idea of making those calls. Since I let my license go away I've gotten out of the habit of calling anyone but my children. Almost all of my clients communicate via e-mail.

When I have to call a business I put it off - dreading the "menus," the hold times, and being connected to someone who has no idea how to deal with the problem.

Ugh - that reminds me. I need to call the phone company repair people and tell them our line is full of loud static. No doubt due to the snowstorm that's been raging for a day or so.

Posted by Marte Cliff, your real estate writer (Marte Cliff Copywriting) 7 months ago

Our office prompted us to call past clients a month or so ago. I don't know why the art of communicating is lost on so many of us. As long as it is a friendly "hello and thank you for thinking of me", it's a wonderful reason to pick up the phone.

Good morning Margaret.  One reason I don't call Rainers very often is that I'm pretty busy calling leads as well as past clients.  I do need a break from the phone now and then.

I like to send a short text to people before I call them. Just to make sure it's a good time for them since we lead such busy lives. And it's always good to have a specific topic to call on. Certainly have enjoyed the couple of times you have called me, Margaret.

Picking up the phone to say thank you for the holiday card is a great idea! I am going to start with that.  Part of my business planning for 2018 (starting tomorrow is to call my sphere on a quarterly basis - this is a good way to start! thank you! and I agree so very much about Lou - I was as shocked as you were.

Have a wonderful new year! I wish you all the best with lots of joy, laughter, success and abundance of health and happiness!

Oh it can feel like an intrustion to actually call someone on the phone--so many pp don't even pick up!  However, there are other ways to stay in touch.  It depends on if you think the receipiant will appreciate the call
