Paying It Forward Or...

Today while in a small grocery store, busy of course at this time of year, I witnessed someone holding up the line putting things back after each price check. There was not enough money for all her items. So I slipped the cashier some money and said Merry Christmas. Please allow this lady to take all her items. The lady thanked me and left.

I complimented the cashier on how well she handled the situation. After all there was a line waiting and she spent a lot of time with this one customer. That's when the cashier told me this lady does this ALL the time! I was surprised but not shocked. I felt good for "helping" and then felt a bit taken.

This lady found a new way of "begging" not on the streets but in a warm store and with good people wanting to help. I felt much better knowing that the money went for food and not anything else.

So was I paying it forward or was I was I just paying?

I think I will call the store manager in the morning.

It's good to help others. It's sad seeing others with different motives.

Margaret, I think that's sometimes the struggle in today's times.  Are we being taken advanatage of, or truly helping?  I figure if it's the first, well that's between them and God if I acted in good faith to help.  Bill

Hi Margaret

That's a tough issue. One likes to assume the best but sometimes that's not always the case.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Good morning, Margaret... as Jeff Dowler said it's a tough issue and hard to determine what the underlying motives are. At the end of the day, you did what you thought was right to help another person... and that's all you can do. Merry Christmas!

Good morning Margaret. I think the story is very trying but you did your part and that's all any of us can do.

Good for you, last week while I was at Walmart grocery shopping there was a girl in from of me with christmas presents and she was short money.  I said wait, don't put them back, Santa said I should help someone today and you are it.  It was only 80 dollars but I made her day and mine at the same time.

Oh dear, that  is too bad to hear someone has found a scam. I understand how you felt betrayed Margaret. Paying it forward and helping when we can is a good habit to get into...as Will so aptly put it.

I think you paid it forward - regardless of her 'method' of obtaining the help, she still needed it.

In the future, let your heart be your guide and don't let this 'negative' feeling stand in the way of being the loving, caring, giving person that you are, Margaret!

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a fabulous 2018! Hugs...
