Second Chance In Baltimore

Today was my first visit to Second Chance in Baltimore.

I met my friend and trainer John along with Erin and Hadley.

What a fun afternoon touring this amazing building.

Second Chance is a 501(c) nonprofit that gives a second chance to materials, people and the environment.

Instead of demolition, this wonderful company deconstructs homes and buildings... salvaging the usable items.

The items are made available, to the public, in  200,000 square feet of retail space.

Click below to see photos from my visit today.

The reclaimed materials along with other donated items are offered at a discount. Each piece has a price and dates with future reductions.

These revenues then give "green collar jobs" to those that face obstacles to employment.

Second Chance believes people matter more than profits.

Located near the stadiums at 1700 Ridgely Street 21230

Second Chance is open 7 days a week and the inventory is constantly changing.

Good name-Second Chance.

Margaret what a great idea, I see so many valuable appliances being discarded when they do remodels... I managed to get a top of the line stove directly from one of the owners who was doing a remodel for a song....on a side note like the new picture, Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. The idea of Second Chance is brilliant. Re using rather than filling our dumps...and giving others a second chance. I wonder if other cities have this same kind of option.

Thank you!

Margaret if they do not they should, just to give you an idea I ended up with a top of the line stove in mint condition for $100 and having my handyman pick it up and install it in our kitchen... I should do a post about it...Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. That would be a good post. I had clients who bought an entire kitchen with cabinets, appliances, granite and all the other bells and whistles...for a tiny fraction of the cost. They got very lucky..this kitchen from Second Chance fit the footprint of their old kitchen

Here we have Habitat for Humanity but it works a little different here, most items are donated from remodelling from regular people or from contractors. They also have used furniture.  Its a bit far from me and I am very seldom in that area but I go when I can and I love it.

Hi Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - Second Chance is giving many people a really good second chance at home remodeling using creativity and imagination. It will all look better in people's homes rather than the landfill.

Over the years, I can testify that you support home ownership and understand that needs are unique. Everyone and everything has value.

Oh, what a fun thing to do on a rainy day, Margaret! I love all that they have to offer - including artwork? That's awesome!

We have a ReStore here that does the same thing but, doesn't have a lot of 'fluff' stuff - just doors, door knobs, lighting, slabs of granite, building supplies, etc. I like the concept better at Second Chance in Baltimore!

Happy Sunday, Margaret!

These are super facilities. In Sarasota, Habitat for Humanity runs a second-hand building materials reuse store and the quality and value of the items available is amazing. It sure beats filling landfills with valuable items.

Hi Margaret - I have heard of this.  This is really a great idea.  We had something similar near us.

Hi Margaret

What a cool thing to do, and so much better for the environment, and for those who might get a second chance. Sounds like the ReStore for Habitat for Humanity! There are several places in our area that rescue materials from renovation projects. I think it's a great idea.
