Best Business Practices The HomeRome Way

My best business practice from the first year was connecting with people from the different areas of my life.

Guess I should start from the beginning and

Why I Chose Real Estate...It Really Was an Accident!

I was rear ended while driving and had neck and back issues and surgery was recommended. Since they could not guarantee the use of my hands...I decided against it. That was a mild way of saying I refused the operation.

They advised me not to lift more than five pounds. Whoa! My box of clay weighed 50 more ceramics for awhile.

During this time I get a "cold" call from a former nurse asking if I wanted to sell my house? I wondered why she would be interested. It was because she was now a Realtor®.

I had been helping people write ads for their homes and finding houses in the area for friends. For that service, I got beautiful thank you notes.  This former nurse told me...I could get paid for doing that and she wanted my referrals.

That same week, I signed up and  took a Real Estate course  to "tide" me over until I could get back to the clay which I loved.

That was in 1990 and many of my former patients, their families and owners of my artwork are now my real estate clients. I love walking into a home and finding one of my custom pieces out on display. I love being able to use my nursing background especially the psychology that is needed for the stress of moving. I love being able to incorporate my nursing, my ceramic art and my love of real estate into my life.

My earliest mentor was Floyd Wickman and I took a course in the beginning of my real estate career. My best take away from that course was protecting my commission.

The other... go out and see IF I want the listing and NOT if I can get it.

My best business practice comes from my marketing, my blogging and my Live radio show.

I am always looking for new ways to make the weekly show interesting to the listening audience while promoting my active listings and getting new and unique properties to represent.

If you  have an idea for the show, let me know.

Do you  have a topic or passion you would like to discuss?

Hi Margaret

Great story...but then I knew some of this already. What an honor, and amazing learning experience, to have Floyd as a mentor!

Good morning Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland,

I loved reading your post today and couldn't believe I didn't know you had Floyd Wickman as a mentor. I did too..I have so many take aways from him (still love his protect your commission) I remember and still practice is CITO (come in to the office). If a new buyer won't do this to meet may not be a good match! I still go to a listing appointment to see IF I want it NOT if I can get it. There are times I don't take a listing because I know its not a good fit.

Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland how did I not know your back story! I knew you had been a nurse but not about the accident that steered you to another path of success.  Good ole Floyd - amazing guy and how great that you've had him on your show. Love your story!
