Safety First- Including Your Own Home

This week electricians were in my home to update smoke detectors. It was an older system and I was tired of changing batteries .

I recommend this to my clients so why not do the same for myself.

Thanks to these professionals we are completely up to code including fire, smoke and carbon monoxide.

The prior week, my friend changed a garage light bulb in the overhead mechanism and noticed an improper connection. Thank you Bill!

Checking the garage door openers, the electrician was not a happy camper!

He saw both plugged into regular ceiling outlets with no junction boxes.

The third prong was missing on both.

Also the wiring was brittle and cracked.

I was not quick enough to get many pictures...he worked fast.

In the photo you can see the wiring and plug before and the corrected wiring in a proper junction box.

Note:

If you see a safety hazard, you don't have to be an inspector. Point these things out to your family, clients and friends.

Safety first please!

Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - It happens too often that we advise our sellers and buyers on what to do - and we do not do it at our home itself!

Charity should begin at home, isn't it?

I like that idea of having your smoke detector wired into your home, rather than using batteries.  Have you ever noticed that the batteries always die and beep in the middle of the night?  What's up with that?

Smart move having these issues corrected by a professional. Too often, the small problems snowball into huge ones.

What I think is good about me is that I have no mechanical skills and can't fix much. This means I always rely of pros.

Staying on top of home repairs and maintenance is a important.  I just had an electrician through last year to fix some issues.

You're a smart cookier to practice what you preach Margaret. And deferred maintenance is never good, in any home. I'm in repair mode myself!

Wow....how dangerous! How terrible that someone would do such a job and leave it for someone else to deal with the consequences!

Sharon Tara It had been that way for a very long time. Glad it was found and corrected.
