How Do You Check Out The Neighborhood

How do you check out the neighborhood BEFORE you live there?

This was  a question on my radio show today.

And here are  a few of my suggestions.

Take a walk in the neighborhood at different times of the day, evening and weekend.

What are your concerns?

Is it the noise, parking or traffic ?

Find out if the neighbors have pit bulls or a teenage rock band?

Maybe you need good reception for your HAM Radio...a request from one of my legally blind  callers today.

Do you have  children and need a specific school system?

Do you want to be in a neighborhood that has your contemporaries?

Do you want a family oriented area so you could be a surrogate grandparent and babysit?

Maybe you work nights and there is a motorcycle hobbyist who revs  his bikes up during the day?

Are you dependent on public transportation?

Do you want to walk to the grocery store and other local business?

Neighborhoods have personalities.

Visit the area, talk to the neighbors.

Do you feel comfortable?

Only you know if it's a good fit.

These are some of the old fashioned ways.

There are also numerous sites to look up walk scores, prices, taxes, crime statistics and commute times.

Do your research BEFORE you make a move.

These are all great suggestions - there is so much more to a house than what kind of countertops it has!

Thanks Susan Haughton I had a 70 year old, legally blind, man call in today to ask this question. His plan is to move out of state and is looking for advice.  I like how he is doing his research now before the move.

Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - always, walking in the neighborhood to get the 'feel' of it is the best way to check.

Thanks for so many good suggestions for this.

Great list of important things way beyond the house features. One of my frequent questions is whether the road to the house is paved or dirt!

Margaret - It is important that not only does the house fit a buyer's needs, but the neighborhood must also fit the buyer's needs. You have offered some great suggestions on how to get to know a neighborhood.

This is a good list of options, Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland . It never hurts to take a good book and sit in different spots during different times of the day. I particularly recommend evenings and weekends when most people are home. You can also just walk the block and talk to neighbors.

These and many more considerations are so important before committing to a purchase in a new neighborhood. Great reminder to all.

Before moving to my current neighborhood, I lived in a home on the otherside of the county.  There were many issues there, so when we moved I looked more closely at what was surrounding the home I wished to buy.

Hi Margaret - We have always recommended that to our clients when they aren't very familiar with the area - and neighbors are usually willing to talk to them.
