A Letter To My Dear Old House

Selling homes for me is not about sticks and bricks and taking another listing and making another sale.

Clients, that I choose to work with, are special and unique and many times their home is just as special and unique.

12310 Bonita Ave 410-530-2400

Please take some time to read this letter written by the owner of my

newest special home.

Received 8/11/2016

To my dear old house,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this letter to you, although I know it is time.

As you know, I haven’t been spending as much time with you over the last few years.

You know that I have gotten married since I bought you 15 years ago, you were with us when we got engaged. That was a special night, and there is nowhere else I would have rather received my marriage proposal than there within your sturdy walls.

Well, my husband also has a house. The unfortunate reality is that we can’t continue to keep you both.  I just can’t take care of you the way I used to and you don’t deserve that.

The location of his house just makes better sense for us for many reasons at this point in our lives. It gives us the opportunity to be equidistant to both our families and to be together full time, which is why we got married, right?

Please believe it’s not because of you and please don’t think I am giving up on you. I have so many fond memories of times we have had with you; enjoying the birds, evenings on the covered front porch, coffee on the patio, sitting by the fire pit listening to the crickets, holidays and family gatherings, gently warming our bones in front of the wood stove  in winter, and of course the seven years we had our beloved Duke there with us, including the night he took his last breath.

You have sheltered me through many storms, some from Mother Nature, some from life, and I am so grateful to you for that.  I had a vision for you, a dream that I could restore you to your younger self and I have accomplished a lot of what needed to be done and think you look beautiful.

But now, I need to find someone else who will care about you as much as I do and make you look like the special house you are, on the inside and out.

We have found someone who we really believe will help us accomplish that, you met her this week. She had lots of good things to say about you, I am proud of you.

Please bear that in mind as you receive lots of visitors over the upcoming weeks.

No matter how long it takes, I promise we will leave you in good hands.

Signed,

Your grateful homeowner since 2001

Margaret,

What a lovely letter and lots of creativity here.  I think those of us who sell a house they have loved living in and cared for accordingly feel the same way.  How nice that this seller expressed it.  A

Aw, this is so lovely. I am always honored to help someone move on to another new adventure - but it's generally not an emotionally easy task. So many memories...

Margaret

That's a wonderful, heartfelt letter. You wonder how many homeowners could write letters about the special memories, and the feelings they have about leaving a home to move on to a new one!?

Ron and Alexandra Seigel Whenever I have this kind of seller, I ask them to write a letter. This is a special seller and I am glad she could share this letter.

Jeff Dowler This is a heartfelt letter. Have you ever asked a seller to do this?

HI Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - All of us deal with sellers who just can't let go (detach) from their homes. Many times, the home won't sell until they let go of it.  I know I feel that way about my own home.  What a fabulous way to help your owner transition. I think this person may have a career in writing!

Reading the letter just gave me goosebumps Margaret! Yes, I agree, a house is much more than just walls and a roof over your head.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE It has taken some time for this seller to let go. It is a process that I hope I can help her with.  I will suggest a writing career but I do believe she has a very solid position. Thanks for taking time to stop by.

Andrea Bedard I got those same goosebumps. Our homes hold so many things and they are not all tangible.

Lovely letter and a perfect way to assist a seller in moving through the letting go process. Love it!

I've never felt that way about a house.  When I pack up my family and things I move my "home" to the next place.  I take my memories and I leave behind the "house".  I actually think being too emotionally involved with a house can harm a seller in negotiations. I've seen it time and time again.  So we'll just have to disagree on this point.

What a touching tribute to this old home that has given joy and shelter Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland

Tammy Lankford, We are not disagreeing. To some people houses are just sticks and bricks. To others there is emotional involvement. The good agent knows the difference and keeps the emotions away from the buyers. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland, I was emotional reading this letter and don't even know this seller. While we sell homes each and every day, it means a lot more than signing papers and receiving a big check for many homeowners. Thank you for sharing!

How beautiful...I do agree with Tammy Lankford, about "home" being where you are at the time, but I, like your seller, do get emotional about houses.

very emotional . I loved this read. I feel the same way about my home. Glad it is not on the market. I would be on of those sellers .lol
