Why Did I Chose Real Estate ?

Why Did I Chose Real Estate ?

Real estate was not my first or second career.  I started as a Registered Nurse and then a porcelain artist making custom ceramic pieces for designers, home owners and even agents to give as house warming gifts.

Ceramic art Margaret Rome

Then there was the accident...rear ended while driving.  After sustaining a neck and back injury, the doctors  recommended surgery.  Since they would/could not guarantee the use of my hands, I refused.

They advised me not to lift more than five pounds.  Are you kidding?  My box of clay weighed 50 pounds..no more ceramics for awhile.

During this same time, I received  a "cold" call from a former nurse asking if I wanted to sell my house?

RN Margaret Rome

Why would she be interested ?

Because she was now a Realtor® looking for listings.

I had been helping people write ads for their homes and finding houses in the area for friends. For that service, I got beautiful thank you notes.

This former nurse told me agents could get paid and she wanted my referrals.

That same week I signed up for Real Estate course to "tide" me over until I could get back to my love of clay.

That was  back in 1990 and through the years,  many of my former patients, nurses, doctors, artists and owners of my artwork became real estate clients.

It's rewarding finding a custom piece of my art in a home.

My nursing background, especially the psychology, has been invaluable

 handling the stress of moving.

How fortunate to combine, nursing, ceramic art and the love of real estate.

And this answers...

Why Did I Chose Real Estate?

Thanks for sharing your path to this career. I can certainly see how your nursing skills serve you well, and your artistic flair must help you immensely when clients need advice about color, scale (hard for so many) and furniture layout.

Margaret - Were you ever able to get back to working in clay?

Good Monday morning Margaret. I can see where your artistic talents can be very helpful to your clients. Especially when picking out colors

Margaret, I know some brokers who specifically recruit nurses.  Wonder why?

Margaret, great post!  After working in the restaurant industry during college and spending the last 20 years in Retail, I've moved on to Real Estate.  I don't regret my previous career decisions at all because I feel like I wouldn't be ready to do Real Estate if I hadn't gained all that other experience first.

I wonder every day why I ended up being a Realtor, and how long this path will take me :-)    Great Post, as I sat in church the other Sunday and our pastor spoke about the paths in life we go through, as this kind of hit home.  The more and more I look at it, we as Realtors are caretakers/caregivers with a license to provide people :-)  We deal with all types of people and all types of scenarios and situations, and no result will every repeat itself as the same with any party.

Margaret, I have a feeling that no matter what you were involved in you'd be extremely successful. The real estate industry is much better with you in it.

Margaret, it must have been devastating at the time to have to stop working on your art. I think real estate was a natural choice for you. There's definitely an art to it...

I tell newly licensed agents all the time to promote their transferable skills! Everyone has them. They may not be familiar with the inner-workings of the real estate world, but they do have skills that are unique to them and that are assets to their growing real estate businesses!

Likewise my dear friend.....you almost got an emergency call today!  Girlfriend got a bit feisty today but I was able to calm her down.  I either needed a cocktail or a chat with you but got through it thinking about Mother Superior and eyebrows.

Ahhh, the backstory--love it! I knew you'd been a nurse. I had been in longterm care for 10 years before "retiring"...so we had that in common. I have also been an artist (mostly starving) all of my life, so something else we have in common! Real estate fits you to a "T". T for Terrific!

I had thought about going into real estate when I was in high school and a teacher I respected discouraged me from doing that.  So I find my self in my early 40's needing a new career and this is where I ended up.  Wish I had started here.

I was discouraged all my life from wanting to be a realtor. That's a man's job. I knew of one woman who became a realtor and  her own family tried to discourage her. I went from starting out as  telephone operator to being a hairdresser to going to real estate. Every free weekend I would go to open houses and read the homes sections in the Sunday magazine. In 2005 I was really discouraged with the establishment I was working in and hubby encouraged me to try for my license. He got tired of my complaining about the environment i was in. Couple agents encouraged me much to the chagrin of my employers at the salon. I tell younger people don't be discouraged with some one who gives you a negative because they think they have that power,  when they don't have the power to give you a positive.
