Gilbert & Sullivan Sing
March 30, 2019
The works of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan (known as “G&S”) have been popular in the English-speaking (and singing) world since the initial collaboration of the two in 1871. Generations of families, professionals, and theater-lovers have performed the G&S comic operas, and there have been several popular movies based on them, most recently “Topsy-Turvy."
A "QWERT" is where G&S fans gather and sing through some or all of the operas, with scores in hand, to piano accompaniment. There’s no staging, and none of the dialogue is done, so each opera doesn’t take all that long. It's fun, fun, fun!
We have been offering these for years in Baltimore — therefore the function is called a BaltiQWERT! And this Saturday is the 16th BaltiQWERT
About 50 singers from all over the eastern United States are participating this time. Some are brand new to G&S; some have been performing G&S for DECADES; some are amateurs and others are professionals — but all are looking forward to a wonderfully fulfilling day.
Best of all, anyone who wants to experience this is very welcome to attend and watch — it’s informal; there is no admission fee and plenty of comfortable seating!
